Save Percentage:
The save percentage refers to the ratio of the number of saves made by a goalie to the number of shots on the goal.
A goalie who allows fewer shots into the net will have a higher save percentage. A goalie who allows many shots into the net will have a lower save percentage.
It is used as a goalie statistic in soccer and lacrosse. field hockey and Waterpolo are other sports that use a goalie.
Formula – How do I calculate the save percentage
Save Percentage = Saves / Shots on Goal
- ” save” refers to a shot that is blocked by the goaltender.
- An shot is when the puck is directed towards the net. It is either stopped by the goaltender, or the puck goes in the net. You cannot include shots from a shootout or shots blocked by non-goalie players (blocked shots), and shots that hit the goalpost or miss the net (missed shots). If you are trying to calculate the save percentage for a team, don’t include empty net shots (the goalie has not been on the ice).
Example
Goalie: A goalie must face 219 shots and make 192 saves.
0.877 = 192 Saves / 219 Shots
The save percentage for this goalie is 0.877 or 87.7%.
